Grassy Woodland near South Track

Precious habitat

At 143 hectares, the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve is the largest patch of native remnant woodland on the Bellarine Peninsula. Incorporating both Grassy Woodland and Heathy Woodland zones, it is a valuable habitat for over 300 plant and 200 animal species. At the reserve you will find delicate fungi and wildflowers, wattles, she-oaks and large old trees such as Manna Gums and the critically endangered Bellarine Yellow Gum. A myriad of birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects and mammals seek haven here, relying on the diverse habitat for food, shelter and breeding. With less than 5% of the original vegetation of the Bellarine Peninsula remaining, this reserve is a ‘Natures Ark’ protecting our indigenous wildlife.

A look back

Post European colonisation, the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve site was a privately owned bushland, noted for its natural values. When the land became available for sale in 1962, the Geelong Field Naturalists Club fund-raised to complete a purchase in 1969 and another in 1973. Their foresight has preserved the largest remnant bushland on the Bellarine Peninsula. Discover more history via our History booklet.
